A Bite of Jersey is a classic sandwich spot in Garden Grove with a great Cheesesteak. The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of a quiet shopping center but the multitude of beer signs make it hard to miss. When I walked in I couldn’t help but notice the “down home” feel of everything; there was a comfortableness in the interior that was reflected in the customers.
I’ve always enjoyed a good cheesesteak but I don’t order them very often. Most of the time it’s because there isn’t much variation between cheesesteaks in Orange County; but this one was different. The added Chipotle sauce was a nice smokey addition, what really struck me was the steak itself. It was a little more firm and a bit thicker than most cheesesteak places that I’ve been to. The texture was different enough to change the flavor of the sandwich and the harder hoagie roll also played a factor.
Everything was good in the “boss” sandwich, but I can’t help but think that I would’ve enjoyed it more if the “West Grove” Fries were stuffed into my Hoagie roll. Is there really anything else I can say about these fries? they were hot, they were rich, and they probably raised my blood pressure several points. Just remember all of it comes out hot, so try not to indulge too quickly or you’ll burn your mouth.
A bite of Jersey will take care of that cheesesteak fix that you are looking for and it provides enough variety to satisfy most people. It’s a simple place that does exactly what it’s suppose to and it’s totally worth a visit. They close for two hours mid-day also, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for a late lunch (they gave me a polite nudge at 1:55).
