For as long as I can remember, putting anything between 2 pieces of bread has always made it better. Fried chicken? yup. Thanksgiving ham? absolutely. A paper I wrote in high school about Alduous Huxley’s “Brave New World” where I got a C-? Oh you better believe it. Sandwiches in my opinion, seem mundane, but are the optimum medium for culinary artists, a simple criteria where the potential for customization is almost limitless. It’s a meal that is as diverse as the cultures that consume it and a damn convenient way to eat.
Because I live in Orange County CA, most of the sandwiches will be from the area, but on occasion you’ll get some spots from all around Southern California.
When I hear the name BurntZilla, I think about a Tokyo sized lizard monster who is slowly developing melanoma. Luckily for our gargantuan reptilian friends, Burntzilla is actually a slider/mini hotdog restaurant in Irvine that specializes in comfort food. I also took the liberty of doing this ultra realistic drawing of BurntZilla for you: I […]
When I had lunch at S’Wich Bistro in Irvine, CA I nerded out like crazy (it had nothing to do with the food). It just so happens that S’Wich Bistro is located next to the world famous “Blizzard Entertainment,” makers of some of the most popular games in the world. They’re also responsible for much […]
2016 has been a banner year for all manners of tom foolery, flim flam, and skull duggery. The world may seem like it’s imploding into a hateful music-less vortex, but it doesn’t excuse you from having a great lunch. It is with this in mind that I decided to write a Slayer’s Superlative: Ten OC […]
Ike’s Love & Sandwiches is a Northern California import that is finding popularity in Orange County. Their claim to fame has been their pop culture filled menu & signature “dirty sauce,” which is a standard in every sandwich. When I walked into the restaurant, I was met with the daunting task of trying to order from […]
The Kroft is a comfort food stand that is a part of the Union Market in Tustin California. I wrote about it in a previous post, after I attended Wondercon 2015. It was there that I slipped into fatty bliss after consuming short rib poutine & found myself swimming in decadent goodness. That was at the […]
The 4th Street Market is one of the premier foodie destinations in Orange County. Santa Ana has seen an influx of great restaurants mixed in with it’s long standing Latin culture. My parents enjoyed buying fresh tortillas from the local markets around here on the weekends, so it’s always had a special place in my […]
I happened upon Stefano’s Golden Baked Hams some time ago while decimating my paycheck at a local comic book store nearby. Luckily for me, I had a couple of bucks left over to try one of their paninis. The sandwich was blazing hot when it came out, my fingers burned when trying to angle it. […]
Santa Ana has always been a city that I drove past in Orange County. Not that there was ever anything wrong with it, but I never thought that there was anything to experience there other than singular attractions such as the zoo (where I rode an elephant once) or the Bowers Museum (where I got to […]
The Country of Spain has always had a special place in my heart, it’s one of the first countries that I visited when I first traveled internationally and has been a place that I’ve gone back to several times since then. It opened up my eyes to foods and flavors that I never knew existed […]
Across the street from the beautiful Huntington Beach pier on the famous Pacific Coast Highway lies “Sessions West Coast Deli,” a small and charming sandwich shop that boasts one of the best views one could ask for. I happened up on it whilst trying to kill some time before an appointment with my barber, shame […]
