King’s Fish House, Laguna Hills

King’s Fish House was recently renovated, so the photos in here will be a bit outdated! I’ll try to go back soon and Re-review! Feel free to check out another Laguna Hills Sandwich spot!

I was driving around Laguna Hills the other day running errands and I found myself struggling internally over what I wanted for lunch. It was in the middle of a Nordstrom Rack store while I was deciding on whether or not to buy plaid socks when I was struck by the unforgiving groans of my ravenous hunger. I’ll be the first to admit that food holds more priority than most things in my life, I can’t begin to tell you how many classes I missed in college because a sandwich drew my attention away from the sacred halls of learning and into the sinful canals of deliciocity.

Needless to say, I dropped all of the socks that I was mulling over and headed to my car to find some food.

I ended up at King’s Fish House, a sit down restaurant that shares the parking lot with the Laguna Hills Mall and an In-N-Out Burger.

When I walked in, I immediately noticed all the fish & sea creatures on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. I was immediately drawn to a crocodile inside of a martini glass. It may be corny, but I thoroughly enjoy crocodiles doing human things, like drinking alcohol, dressing in clothing, or tweeting about how they want to drag Kanye West into a swamp. I think my appreciation for these noble anthropomorphic reptiles came from watching Disney’s Robin Hood as a child, I find that as I get older, I tend to root for Captain Crocodile over any of the other characters in the movie (although I do have a soft spot for Nutsy the vulture). Don’t ask me why I went into that, I couldn’t tell you.

So the bar napkins here have cartoon sea creatures on it, and some corny ass jokes printed on them. When the bartender put the cocktail napkin in front of me showing me this Japanese stereotype octopus I almost yelled out “RACISM!” and kicked over a bar stool. Lucky for her, I was hungry and already comfortable in my seat, plus I was more offended by the joke and its popsicle stick corniness.

World Class Tuna Melt

When I ordered the tuna melt, I was a little worried; I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ordered a pricey tuna sandwich only to be presented with canned disappointment. King’s Fish House was true to it’s word when it called it a “World Class Tuna Melt” because went beyond expectation. Rather than over cooked and dry chunks of albacore, their tuna confit was tender and flavorful; no doubt from the poaching in oil it takes to call it “confit.” The melted cheese and remoulade complimented the fish very well (although the sauce was kind of lost). The rye bread was grilled and soaked in clarified butter, so much so that it soaked into the cutting board.

Luckily there is a wall of fire that will help cut those rich flavors:

Dear God, it’s beautiful.
