LA Brisket, Costa Mesa

Costa Mesa is quickly becoming one of my favorite places for food. I’ve had my fair share of sandwiches throughout Orange County and it seems like Costa Mesa has the highest concentration of interesting food spots. Among the different and eclectic places you can find, there is a self-proclaimed “anti-mall” called “The Lab.” Honestly, I don’t care for it, but we don’t have to get into that (you’ll lose your mind reading my inane ramblings).

The Lab Sign

LA Brisket was the reason why I ended up at the mall that day. It’s a not-so-traditional barbecue restaurant that specializes in sandwiches and beef brisket (duh). They have some unique sandwich combinations that you won’t find at other BBQ restaurants so it’s a nice change from the “pulled pork with slaw” route that you see all the time. You also have a choice of protein to put in the sandwich, I obviously ordered the beef brisket.

The LA Brisket “10”

The first thing I noticed when the sandwich came out was the bread. It had a shine on it, like they brush butter on the crust. I’m not going to lie, I was excited about that. When I was done trying to take a flattering photo, I bit into the sandwich and was immediately impress by the meat. It had all the familiar flavors and textures of beef brisket, but the sandwich did a good job of really showcasing the flavors of the meat. Napkins are a must with these saucy sandwiches, so make sure you grab a lot of them. I was hoping for a more impactful horseradish sauce but it was muddle by everything in the sandwich. I didn’t even know there was gruyere in the sandwich until I ate half of it.

My experience at LA Brisket was a good one, their namesake is well earned because the meat was really good. I think I may try a simpler sandwich next time, the meat is good enough on it’s own. Don’t expect the familiar BBQ restaurant dishes here and enjoy it.
