Luna Rossa, Tustin CA

In Irvine/Tustin

Luna RossaWhen I started writing this blog, I didn’t expect to begin seeing sandwiches EVERYWHERE. It’s one of those weird Matrix “red pill” things where I just notice sandwiches where ever I go now; I even considered reviewing a gas station sandwich the other day. I went to Luna Rossa in Tustin expecting to have pasta or maybe a pizza, but like my reliance on my iPhone or my indignation for Kanye West, ordering a sandwich just came natural.

With that being said, Luna Rossa is not a sandwich place, they just happen to have some sandwiches and paninis as lunch specials. If you come for dinner, I urge you to try anything that comes out of their wood burning oven.

The Luna Rossa Meatball sandwich special
Those fries were good too

This sandwich from Luna Rossa is simple in preparation and stellar in execution. I find meatball sandwiches to be a bit boring, but this one was a nice surprise. The house baked Italian bread really took this to the next level; there was a wonderful crispy texture and fragrance that mixed so well with the sauce. The meatballs are nicely seasoned and excellent mixed with the tomato sauce and cheese. You can find bigger portions at other restaurants, but you’d be hard pressed to taste the quality and effort in those like you would here. It really exemplifies what I think is the essence of Italian cuisine: rustic cooking with quality ingredients.

This is by no means a sandwich place, but I would suggest Luna Rossa to anyone looking for Italian cuisine in Orange County.
