I’ve always been a fan of variety, but that can sometimes be an issue when it comes to restaurant menus. When you got to a place like “The Cheesecake Factory” you have plenty to choose from for anyone you happen to be dining with, but it usually comes at the price of flavor. When I went to ZuZu & CoCo in Newport Beach, CA it was a simple and concise menu that was enhanced by the enthusiasm of the people working there. Now I’m not usually a fan of overly positive people, I’m always suspicious of them because I figure they are the ones who end up having one of those weird dungeons in their basement with that face mask with the zipper over the mouth. But alas, I digress from my point. The young lady behind the counter was very friendly and extremely helpful even before I engaged with her, normally in this situation I would just do a rather emasculated scream and run out of the restaurant because human interaction scares me (especially with girls, with the cooties & what not) but she was so helpful that I couldn’t help but say thank you and take her suggestion (while holding back tears).  She directed my to the Panini Section, where I ordered in a quivering voice the turkey & brie panini.
For any of you who don’t know what a panini is, it is essentially a sandwich that is toasted on a press with the filling inside of it. This allow for the outside of the bread to get crispy and flattened while heating the
filling inside. For those on the cutting edge of the culinary and health food markets, the “George Foreman Grill” can also be used as a panini press (and knock out the fat). The panini was on a nice thick sourdough, with turkey, melted brie cheese, and cranberries. It was elegant in it’s simplicity, with the brie adding a creamy balance to the crispy toasted bread. Brie can be overpowering, especially when the outer rind in consumed, so the addition of cranberry did an excellent job of cutting it. The sweet and tart cranberries was a variation in flavor that really brought out some great qualities in both the cheese and the meat. I actually had a sandwich similar to this a couple of years ago in a cafe that was right outside of a house in Warwickshire England that was believed to be the birthplace of William Shakespeare (I even got to experience his old childhood Wi-fi connection) only it had chicken instead of turkey & a toasted baguette. The flavor combination is really simple, but has become one of the favorite sandwich combinations over the years. You don’t see it much in sandwich places in Orange County, so if you ever are in Newport Beach I urge you to come by and check out ZuZu & CoCo, it’s a comfortable little place with a charm that only an expert in Pinterest D.I.Y projects can provide.

That sandwich was sent straight from the gods. I hope you know that.
I can’t deny that.
